Since then\, more and more precise measurements have apparently strengthened the original interpretation. However\, in principle\, if the two-way velocity of light in the interferometers is not exactly the same parameter “c” of Lorentz transformations\, nothing would prevent a non-zero effect. For instance\, in a gaseous medium the small fraction of refracted light could keep track of the motion of matter with respect to some preferred reference frame. Starting from this observation\, there is now a new interpretation where the small irregular residuals always observed in laboratory show intriguing correlations with the direct CMB observations with satellites in space. This opens the possibility of linking the CMB to a fundamental reference system for relativity with substantial implications for cosmology and the interpretation of non-locality in the quantum theory. The talk will focus on the basics of this research with brief notes on some leading scientists involved in these measurements.

EMU will support a broad range of science\, spanning star formation and evolution in our own Galaxy\, galaxy evolution and the links between star formation and supermassive black holes\, to cosmology. EMU has been allocated approximately 1 year of time on ASKAP in the coming 5 year window. I will summarise the technical and scientific goals of the survey\, the current status of and timeline for the survey\, and highlight a selection of recent results from early science and pilot survey data.

Angelo Adamo (INAF\, IASF Palermo) \nABSTRACT:In questo seminario pongo l’attenzione su quei particolari momenti in cui la scienza giuridica ha felicemente intersecato l’osservazione pre-scientifica della natura e\, in seguito\, le scienze fisiche propriamente dette\, traendo da esse\, specie nel passato\, quando ispirazione\, quando una maggiore forza argomentativa.Si tratta di incroci che sembrano denunciare in modo chiaro un’origine comune dello sguardo del fisico e del giurista – un’origine di sicuro meritevole di uno studio storico e filosofico più attento che già sto conducendo – e che la presente ricerca evidenzia solo per la parte avente a che fare con la descrizione di come la nostra specie si è progressivamente impossessata dello spazio esplorabile: un concetto usato in una fase iniziale esclusivamente per indicare territori sulla terraferma e che\, al progressivo crescere delle acquisizioni scientifiche\, tecnologiche e di una parallela evoluzione giuridica\, ha subito diverse modifiche che gli hanno fatto guadagnare pure il significato di distese marine\, di spazi aerei al di sopra delle nazioni e\, in tempi più recenti\, quello di spazio esterno alla nostra atmosfera. SUMMARY:Diagnostics of the solar corona expansion through Metis coronagraph observations

Capuano (University of Catania\, Department of Physics and Astronomy ”Ettore Majorana”\, and INAF – OACT) \nABSTRACT:The solar corona has been investigated in the last decades through observations coming from several spacecraft. The Metis coronagraph\, aboard the ongoing Solar Orbiter mission\, extends the UVCS/SOHO spectrocoronagraph observations of the scattered ultraviolet emission of the coronal plasma performed during solar activity cycle 23\, by simultaneously imaging the coronal visible light polarised brightness (VL pB)\, in the spectral bandpass 580-640 nm\, and the coronal ultraviolet H I Lyα emission\, in the spectral window 121.6 ± 10 nm. Here some specific observations are shown\, such as those taken on May 15\, 2020\, from which important results about the solar wind outflow velocity were inferred by applying the Doppler dimming technique. Other results on the coronal solar wind velocity are presented\, obtained by considering the data acquired during the first quadrature of the Solar Orbiter and the Parker Solar Probe (PSP) spacecraft with respect to the Sun. In particular\, the same parcel of plasma on the East limb was remotely observed with Metis between 3.5 R⊙ and 6.3 R⊙ on January 17\, 2021\, during low-cadence synoptic mode observations\, and was sampled in situ by PSP at about 22 R⊙ on January 18\, 2021. In this case\, information about several coronal parameters were inferred with unprecedented details\, thanks to the high quality of Metis and PSP data. Finally\, other results concerning the first coronal mass ejection observed with Metis on January 16-17\, 2021 are reported. In this case\, also considering data coming from instruments onboard Solar Orbiter and other spacecraft\, a 3D reconstruction and detailed physical information about this structure were obtained. Therefore\, Metis\, even when operates in synoptic mode and in synergistic coupling with other instruments\, allows to get novel and detailed information about the structure of the solar corona with an accuracy never reached until now.

Sussman (Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México) \nABSTRACT:I would like to summarize and present cosmological applications of two proposals of Gravitational entropy\, which are distinct from the standard holographic approach and from the entropy of the sources. One is the proposal by Clifton-Ellis and Tabakol (CET) based on the Bel-Robinson tensor\, the other by Hosoya and Buchert (HB)\, based on the Leibler-Kullbach functional of Information Theory. By applying these proposals to inhomogenous dust solutions of Einstein’s equations (LTB and Szekeres models)\, we have shown in various published articles that both proposals are equivalent in their predictions\, but CET is local and HB is non-local. Both yield entropy production in spacetime regions that can be characterized by generation and growth of structure (either overdensities or voids). Even so\, their fundamental stellar parameters (as mass\, radii\, temperature and luminosity) are poorly known. This relates to important uncertainties about their formation processes\, structure and evolution. We are attempting  to face this challenge at the research group GEMAE (Grupo de investigación en Estrellas Masivas y Agrupaciones Estelares) at the University of La Plata\, together with collaborators in Chile and Spain. We rely mainly on high-quality and high-resolution spectroscopic data collected by 18 years by the OWN Survey of the O-type and WN-stars in the Southern hemisphere. To date\, several challenges have prevented to detect the B-modes partly because of the lower sensitivity of the detectors. Our own Galaxy is observed in this context as a foreground contamination. However the awareness of improving the modeling of its polarized emission has been constantly increase not only to assess the cosmological signals but also to provide new insights onto the Galactic magnetic field probed with the Galactic polarized emissions\, e.g. synchrotron and thermal dust. Indeed\, the effect of atmospheric turbulence on wavefronts reduces severely the resolution of ground-based astronomical observations. Thus\, in the context of astronomical observations\, the site-selection has now become essential with the advent of the next generation of Extremely Large Telescopes (ELT). Indeed\, it is important to choose sites with reduced cloud coverage\, weak turbulence and low aerosol distribution in order to enhance observations time and to improve their scientific performance. It is also important to remember that the choice of sites hosting astronomical projects must meet very strict criteria in terms of optical quality. Future optical communications and telemetry stations will be forced to meet the same requirements. \nBeyond Site-Testing and Site-Selection for Astronomical Observations or Optical Communications\, precise knowledge of atmospheric turbulence parameters is of interest for the technical specifications of the Adaptive Optics (AO) systems dedicated to real-time correction of the atmospheric turbulence. In addition\, the CN2(h) profiles (as well as wind and outer scale profiles) with high vertical resolution is necessary for a better evaluation of the performance of AO systems. A large number of monitors have been developed for this purpose\, particularly with the emergence of ELT projects\, but very few meet the required need. Recently\, a new station has been developed in the framework of a European consortium and a contract with the European Space Agency (ESA). This ANAtOLIA station is a compact mobile high-performance station\, equipped with the most performing instruments leading to the whole atmospheric parameters. \nANATOLIA is a ESA funded project aimed to study\, among other topics\, the  effects of aerosols and atmospheric turbulence on optical communication. These small “primitive” bodies are “undifferentiated” (they did not undergo phase density separation\, irreversibly altering their mineralogy). They have evolved little since their creation\, spurring a composition relatively close to the primordial proto-planetary disk. However\, other processes\, such as thermal alteration\, aqueous alteration\, shocks\, or space-weathering\, can affect these bodies’ surfaces. This issue is because remote-sensed data acquired while studying these bodies target these surfaces. If these surfaces have been altered\, they can induce a particular bias in the study of the composition of these small bodies. Therefore\, it is paramount to understand the processes affecting the surface of primitive asteroids to assess their composition correctly.There are several ways to study the surface of primitive asteroids\, such as remotely\, from the Earth or a satellite orbiting the body of interest\, by acquiring spectroscopic data (gaining access to surface chemical and mineralogical composition). It is also possible to study these bodies in a laboratory environment by working on analogous materials\, such as certain classes of “primitive” meteorites (carbonaceous chondrites)\, on terrestrial analogs (simpler to study than meteorites but less closely related to extraterrestrial materials)\, or directly on extraterrestrial materials brought back by sample return missions.In this work\, we replicate the effects of space weathering (SpWe) on the surface of primitive asteroids in a laboratory environment. More specifically\, we focus on the effects of solar wind\, the dominant SpWe process on “young” surfaces of the solar system. We have chosen three terrestrial minerals analogous to a “primitive” surface – three hydrated minerals (two serpentines and one saponite) – of which we have produced several pellets which have been bombarded using He and Ar ions\, to investigate the effects of two different solar wind. In doing so\, we made analogous materials of weathered primitive surface matter.These analogs were then characterized by infrared spectroscopy\, from the visible to the far-infrared range\, to study chemical changes prompted by ion bombardment. This was done by investigating how certain spectroscopic features – characteristic of hydrated silicates – changed upon ion bombardment. We detected several effects\, such as darkening in the visible range\, visible slope reddening and bluing\, and a systematic shift towards longer wavelength affecting the position of several spectroscopic features.This spectroscopic characterization was followed by a study at a smaller scale using electron microscopy. We first characterized the surface of our weathered analogs using scanning electron microscopy. Then\, we investigated the morphological and physicochemical changes in the bombarded layer\, at a nanometer scale using transmission electron microscopy. Strong vesiculation effects of various kinds were identified in the ion-bombarded amorphized layers\, textural changes\, and some elemental concentration evolution (such as the loss of oxygen in the utmost top surfaces\, preferential amorphization of magnesium\, etc.). In this seminar I am going to talk about CGWs\, what are they and what astrophysical sources and mechanisms can produce them\, with a particular focus on non-axisymmetric spinning Neutron Stars. On atmosphere-less surfaces\, organics are detected in the visible and near-infrared thanks to observations performed with the instruments on-board space probes and telescopes. Further information on the properties of organics comes from the analysis of meteorites\, interplanetary dust particles\, and unique samples collected on comets and asteroids during dedicated space missions. \nUnderstanding the properties of organic matter present in small bodies would allow us to shed light on processes that happened at the dawn of the Solar System\, when these objects formed by the aggregation of the materials available in the protoplanetary disk. With its long observational history and its rich emission line spectrum\, RU Lup is a prime example to study this environment. \nRU Lup is a monitoring target within the ULLYSES survey for Classical T Tauri stars. Optical spectroscopic observations with CHIRON and ESPRESSO were obtained simultaneously with the two epochs of the ULLYSES monitoring program for RU Lup. \nIn this talk\, I will discuss the main results obtained by analyzing this collection of data\, supplemented by the two TESS observations and the archival AAVSO photometry of RU Lup.Using the high resolution ESPRESSO spectra\, we improved the measurements of the stellar parameters\, especially the projected rotational velocity (vsini).We determined the veiling fraction for the ESPRESSO spectra\, showing that the veiling consists of two components: a continuum emission likely originating in the accretion shock and line emission that fills in the photospheric absorption lines.We detected a periodic modulation in the narrow component (NC) of the He I 5876 line with a period that is compatible with the stellar rotation period\, indicating the presence of a compact region on the stellar surface that we identified as the footprint of the accretion shock. Although the brightness of RU Lup changed drastically both on daily and yearly timescales\, this region is overall stable over the 3 years covered by the observations.An analysis of the high-cadence TESS light curves revealed quasi-periodic oscillations (QPO) on timescales shorter than the stellar rotation period. This suggests that the accretion disk in RU Lup extends inward of the corotation radius and the star accretes through a magnetic boundary layer (MBL). So far\, we have only one confirmed direct detection of protoplanets in the disk of PDS 70\, with some tentative results (e.g. AB Aur). Yet disk structures are found almost ubiquitously across the sample of resolved disks. We are investigating the potential relationship between inner disk winds and outflows (traced by optical emission lines\, such as [OI])\, and the presence and type of disk substructures. We aim to determine whether or not the various substructures are the direct results of protoplanet formation. \nI will present new results from recent and archival observations of PDS 70. In order to investigate such connections between winds\, substructures and planets\, we turn to the one system where we have certainly detected the planets. We have carefully applied established techniques to the high-resolution spectra to reveal previously unseen forbidden emission profiles. These results suggest a significant wind originating from the inner disk. We compare these results and measurements of the mass accretion rate and disk properties to those of other weakly accreting young stars and those with transition disks. \nWe are also carrying out this investigation for the PENELLOPE/ULLYSES sample of ~80 young stars. Its primary objective is to detect the faint B-mode polarization patterns in the CMB\, which are believed to be imprints of gravitational waves from the early universe\, particularly from the period of cosmic inflation. LiteBIRD is equipped with a 30 arcmin beam width and an extraordinarily low polarization noise of 2.16μK-arcmin\, making it uniquely capable of capturing large scale full-sky CMB polarization. \nOur studies address two significant challenges in detecting Inflationary B-modes: foregrounds and the weak gravitational lensing of the CMB.Foregrounds\, varying with observation frequency\, can be mitigated through multi-frequency sky observations. However\, gravitational lensing of the CMB presents a different problem\, as it is not frequency-dependent and causes E-mode polarization to convert to B-modes. This conversion masks the primordial B-modes we aim to detect. Our work concentrates on estimating the mass distribution from the CMB field to create a template of lensing B-modes. I will present state-of-the-art observations of neutral atomic hydrogen (HI) and interstellar magnetic fields\, which\, combined with numerical simulations and novel statistical tools based on machine vision\, reveal three crucial aspects of the MC lifecycle. First\, the signature of magnetization in the structure of MCs in the solar neighborhood\, within 500 parsecs from the Sun. Two\, the imprint of supernova feedback in the HI structure across the Galactic plane. And finally\, the coupling between atomic and molecular gas in and around MCs. Chiedi quindi alla polvere\, ma di una stella\, se vuoi sapere cosa ci attende se cadessimo in un Buco Nero\, dove lo spazio diventa tempo e il tempo diventa spazio\, dove forse si cela il passaggio verso un nuovo Universo gemello del nostro. Siete pronti a questo viaggio cosmico? \nRelatore: Alfio Bonanno (Primo Ricercatore – INAF Osservatorio Astrofisico di Catania e INFN Sezione di Catania). \nAlfio Bonanno\, è Primo Ricercatore INAF associato alla Sezione di Catania dell’INFN. I suoi interessi di ricerca principali sono la Gravità Quantistica e lo studio dei campi magnetici stellari. Durante il dottorato di Ricerca è stato Research Assistant alla University of Alberta dove ha lavorato con il gruppo di cosmologia di Werner Israel e ha poi proseguito la sua esperienza in varie università e centri di ricerca europei. Attualmente lavora presso l’Osservatorio Astrofisico di Catania e nel tempo libero suona il pianoforte. SUMMARY:ESP2024 - PLATO PLANETARY SYSTEMS: Formation to Observed architectures
DESCRIPTION:PLATO is the 3rd mission of class M in the ESA Cosmic Vision program. Its main goal is detecting terrestrial planets in the habitable zone of  solar type stars. With its huge FOV\, most of the PLATO targets are bright stars that will be monitored with high cadence (25 s) for at least 2-3 years during the long duration observing program\, while contemporary a number of very bright stars in the sample will be observed with 2.5 s cadence. The collected data\, photometry from space and high resolution spectroscopy from the ground\, will provide accurate planetary structures as well as  architectures and evolutionary stage – via asteroseismic analysis – of a large number of planetary systems. PLATO is planned for a launch in Dec 2026. \nMore information on PLATO are on the ESA website and in PLATO Mission Consortium website. \nWith  PLATO Mission due for launch soon  this would seem a good time to review the present state of knowledge of exoplanet systems and the objectives of the mission. PLATO is optimized for the detection and characterization of small planets in the habitable zones of Sun-like stars. By combining two cutting-edge approaches: planetary transits and the study of the internal structure of stars using stellar seismology\, supported by a dedicated ground-based observation programme.In combination with a dedicated ground based observation programme\, PLATO will provide accurate planetary parameters (including age) for a large sample of exoplanets which could be used to answer many scientific questions eg if there are favoured evolutionary paths for exoplanets by comparison with theoretical population models PLATO will provide accurate and complete planetary parameters (including age) for a large sample of exoplanets\, allowing to address a variety of scientific questions: planet occurrences\, trends in composition\, dynamical evolution\, favoured evolutionary paths\, etc. \nThe aim of this conference is to review the current state of the art in the field and to examine the range of scientific questions PLATO data could prove useful. DESCRIPTION:L’Istituto Nazonale di Astrofisica sarà presente all’edizione 2024 di Etna Comics\, rassegna di fumetti e giochi che si svolge a Catania dal 6 al 9 giugno. \n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				Per il secondo anno consecutivo\, l’Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica parteciperà alla ormai consolidata rassegna di fumetti e giochi Etna Comics\, manifestazione inaugurata nel 2011 e che si tiene ogni anno presso il centro fieristico le Ciminiere di Catania. \nIn particolare l’INAF si presenta con una serie di attività interattive nell’Area Family. Potrete infatti giocare a PIXEL – Picture (of) the Universe\, il gioco da tavolo sulla risoluzione in astrofisica o a Cosmo Hunters\, gioco di carte sull’osservazione degli oggetti celesti\, senza dimenticare il Code Hunting Game\, una caccia al tesoro virtuale nel mondo dell’astronomia che vi permetterà di entrare nel mondo del coding. Per gli appassionati di giochi a quiz c’è poi Chi vuol essere astrofisico?\, con un neanche troppo nascosto riferimento a un famoso quiz televisivo. \nCi sono poi molte attività che stimolano la parte artistica\, in particolare quella dei bambini\, come per esempi Il Solametro – Disegna i Pianeti e mettili al posto giusto\, o ancora Disegna il tuo pianeta (reale o immaginario) e un classico come Pixel Art\, ovviamente a tema astronomico. \nNell’Area Comics\, poi\, il 7 giugno alle 11 in sala Galatea Angelo Adamo\, ricercatore tecnologo dell’INAF IASF di Palermo\, presenta INAFfumètti: con la testa ben oltre le nuvole (balloons)\, nel corso del quale presenterà la sua ultima opera\, realizzata in collaborazione con Sandro Bardelli\, dell’OAS di Bologna. B.A.O. – Baryon-Acoustic-Oscillations\, che segue anche stilisticamente l’opera dello scorso anno\, presentata a Lucca Comics&Science 2023\, è incentrato sulla materia oscura ed è un’ottima introduzione alla scienza dietro Euclid\, il satellite dedicato proprio allo studio di questa sfuggente forma della materia.Ovviamente i lettori di EduINAF possono scaricare il fumetto a questo link: B.A.O. – Baryon-Acoustic-Oscillations. \nBuona lettura e una buona Etna Comics a chi andrà a visitare questa emozionante rassegna! \nFonte: EduINAF
