Activity
Quantum gravity and asymptotic safety: functional renormalization group, running of Newton’s coupling, quantum-corrected effective actions.
Regular black holes: formation in gravitational collapse, interior stability and observational signatures (quasi-normal modes, shadows, evaporation).
Magnetohydrodynamics: MHD instabilities, turbulence and dynamo theory; stellar activity.
Stellar astrophysics and asteroseismology.
He supervises five PhD students and is scientific supervisor of two postdoctoral researchers.
Curriculum vitae
Senior Researcher (Primo Ricercatore) at INAF – Catania Astrophysical Observatory and associate of INFN, Catania Section. Laurea (1992) and PhD in Physics (1995) at the University of Catania; Research Assistant at the University of Alberta, Della Riccia Fellow in Strasbourg, Marie Curie Fellow (2006) and DFG Mercator Fellow (2024–2025) at the Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam (AIP), where he has been a Guest Scientist since 2025. Italian National Habilitation as Full Professor in Theoretical Physics (2015). At the University of Catania he teaches Magnetohydrodynamics and Plasma Physics, after teaching General Relativity for many years.
With M. Reuter he introduced in 2000 the renormalization-group-improved black hole, now a reference point in asymptotically safe gravity; more recently he showed that regular black holes can form in gravitational collapse. In stellar astrophysics he is a member of the Kepler, TESS and PLATO asteroseismic consortia.
Principal Investigator of the INAF Theory Grant “Unveiling the magnetic side of the Stars” (2024–2026). President of IAU Commission E1 “Solar Radiation and Structure” (2024–2027) and Corresponding Member of the Accademia Gioenia.
Publications: 138 refereed papers, 6,866 citations, h-index 42 (INSPIRE-HEP, October 2026).
